About the Teacher

INTRODUCTION: Meet Mrs. Howrigon

Welcome to Mrs. Howrigon's google site! For the 2023-2024 school year, I am teaching 6th grade core math, 6th math plus, 6th grade math content literacy and math intervention. This is my eighteenth year teaching, my fifteenth year in Portage. Go Huskies! I became a teacher because I love helping others succeed. Math isn't always easy, but it is extremely rewarding when we accomplish what we previously thought was hard or even impossible. My goal is to help each student who enters the classroom be successful and confident in math this year.

On a personal note....

I grew up in Grandville, Michigan, a community very similar to Portage. I was very involved in athletics, and other school activities. After high school, I went away to college to obtain my secondary education degree from Central Michigan University. I am the first one in my family to graduate from college (and I am the youngest!). I majored in mathematics and minored in health. I got my first teaching job right out of college at Fennville Public Schools. I taught three years of math and health in the middle school and high school. I loved the community, but desired to be closer to home, so I was fortunate to take a job in Portage. I am so glad I made the move! Portage is a great community that reminds me of my childhood. While teaching, I worked on completing a graduate degree from Western Michigan University. I graduated with a Master's degree in Evaluation, Measurement and Research. This degree has aided me in the classroom to measure and improve the success of all students!

I have been married for fifteen years and we have three amazing boys! Our oldest son Elias is now eleven years old and our middle son Titus is ten and our youngest Silas is seven.  You will recognize our oldest around the building because he attends North with me, but the younger two are at 12th Street Elementary!  We are so blessed to have them each in our lives!

My family and I really enjoy the outdoors. We spend much of our free time outside enjoying the beautiful state of Michigan. Some of our favorite activities are kayaking, swimming, boating, camping, hiking, downhill skiing, sledding (you're never too old for this), and more!
